OS Alternatives to Dreamweaver | Opensource.com

Looking for an open source alternative to Dreamweaver or another proprietary HTML/CSS editor? Let's round up some of your options.
Not all that many years ago, pretty much every webpage on the Internet was, at some level, designed painstakingly by hand. It was tough, and before CSS really took hold and became well supported across most common browsers, it often involved hacking a layout together by using HTML tables in a way that they were never really envisioned to support.
While some designers developed workflows completely based around manual editing of raw HTML files, the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor began to emerge as a tool of empowerment to millions of amateur and professional designers who didn't know, or at least hadn't mastered, the art of hypertext markup.
Products like CoffeeCup, HotDog, FrontPage, GoLive, and many others filled the market, and many web-based WYSIWYG editors emerged as well. Among the more successful was Macromedia (later Adobe) Dreamweaver, which was among my personal favorites for many years.
These web authoring tools weren't just about WYSIWYG editing; even for those who were comfortable with direct authoring of markup language, these tools offered advantages with template control, file management, and simply reducing the time it takes to create functional code.
But just as these helpful editors were expanding access to webpage creation, something else was happening too. Content management systems like Drupal and Wordpress (and many, many others before them) displaced the need for the average content producer to need to edit raw HTML at all. You could easily make a functional website without even worrying about the underlying markup.
So did the rise of the content management system change the web? Absolutely. Did it eliminate the need to hand code HTML? Well, for some people, yes. But as the web moved from a collection of content to a platform for applications, just as many new opportunities have arisen for doing markup have disappeared. Every software as a service application, every social media network, and even many mobile applications, rely on HTML and CSS to render their display. And those content management systems? They still need templates to function.
And though many helpful libraries exist to standardize and simplify the web development process, coding for the web isn't being displaced any time soon. And though proprietary tools are still common, there is a rich collection of open source alternatives out there. Here are some you should consider.

Eight Firefox extensions you don't need

By Lisa Hoover

The Firefox Web browser community has created thousands of wonderful extensions that make surfing and working with the Internet fun and productive. While many extensions are homes runs, here are a few that just don't make it out of the ballpark.

The object of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is to write a 50,000-word novel in a mere 30 days. That's stressful enough without being constantly reminded of how far you're falling behind, yet that's just what the Nanowrimo Meter does. Most writers won't want a reminder of their cumulative lack of progress. Unless, of course, you're the type of writer that can churn out 11,554 cogent words in two days. If that's the case, we should talk.

As someone who has used Leet-speak more than once to transmit messages to my geekiest of friends (let's keep that between us), I can completely understand the attraction of the Leet Key extension. The idea of being able to automatically type in Leet is nifty, but the extension is so over-the-top geeky that it's probably best to not even download it. Or at least not tell anyone if you do. \/\/0udn'7 y0u 46r33?

Emurse.com is a Web site that helps job-seekers create the perfect résumé. There's an extension available that lets Emurse users send their résumés to prospective employers any time the mood strikes by simply right-clicking on any email link and choosing "Send Resume via Emurse.com." There are so many things that could go wrong with this process that it's hard to know where to begin. Emurse might send the résumé in a format the employer doesn't want; it may contain header and footer ads; and of course, it adds the potential for technical glitches or mishaps as your résumé wings its way to the human resources department. You certainly don't want to get on a job recruiter's radar because your résumé was accidentally sent 17 times. While the résumé service itself is likely a good one, the extension is better left in the toolbox.

Unless you don't browse the Internet until Mercury is in retrograde, you can probably skip AstroligicNet.com's extension that helps you identify your daily tarot and fortune cookie. On the other hand, if you use other kinds of data input to plan your day, maybe you'll find the US Department of Homeland Insecurity Idiocy Level useful.

I tried to think of a use for the Homepage Randomizer extension, and I have to admit, I'm stumped. Isn't the whole purpose of a home page to be a predictable location to return to as a starting point at the beginning or end of a browsing session? Isn't a static home page like Netvibes or iGoogle what people choose when they want a parking place for all the information they're busy collecting all day? I, for one, want to know that clicking on my homepage will take me right where I'm expecting. Maybe that's just me.

While I'm all about customizing the look and feel of the browsing experience, there is such a thing as taking the idea too far. Google Icon? Just how long are you looking at a Google search results page if you need to dress up each result with its own icon?

Grocery List Generator helps you list and track your shopping list so you always remember just what you need when you get to the store. Although it seems like this extension should have a ton of features to make it a more practical tool than other options, it really doesn't. It has space for listing food items, and it prints your list. Think I'll stick to the old-fashioned method.

Fans of comedian Tom Green might like the extension that tracks the status of his Web site, TomGreen.com. Are his fans so rabid that they need up-to-the-second information on his every movement? I don't know, since I couldn't find anyone to ask. If you're a fan then, um, enjoy this extension I found. If you're Tom Green, forget I said anything.

Ten Firefox extensions to keep your browsing private and secure

Most people lock their doors and windows, use a paper shredder to protect themselves from identity theft, and install antivirus software on their computers. Yet they routinely surf the Internet without giving a second thought to whether their browser is secure and their personal information safe. Unfortunately, it's easy for someone with nefarious intentions to use a Web site to glean data from -- or introduce spyware to -- your computer. Even worse, sometimes all you have to do is randomly click on a site to have your data probed in a most unwelcome way.

Mozilla Firefox has several security settings you can adjust via the Preferences pane, but there are also more than 150 privacy and security extensions you can add as well. They are easy to install and take little time to set up; some even work automatically after you restart your browser. Let's have a look at some of the most popular and most useful.

One of the best ways to protect your computer is to prevent the browser from using JavaScript at Web sites without permission. JavaScript, though useful for developing glitzy Web sites, has gained something of a reputation as a method for doing Bad Things to unsuspecting computers. NoScript is an extension that makes every site that uses JavaScript ask your permission before running it. NoScript can render JavaScript-heavy sites unreadable, but it provides a whitelist of acceptable sites that you can easily add to in order to speed up your surfing experience.

Many people use Tor to hide their online surfing habits. FoxTor provides a way to mask and unmask your browser on the fly, without having to commit to anonymous surfing throughout an entire browsing session. It requires the use of Tor and Privoxy.

Your browser's history logs help provide a speedier surfing experience for you. Unfortunately, skilled hackers can peek at them remotely to see where you've been. Deleting log information after each browsing session would slow you down, but fortunately, there's another way. Don't delete your data -- hide it with SafeHistory.

Some of the most sensitive information sent over the Internet travels via email, so many people prefer to send their messages encrypted. The Gmail S/MIME extension encrypts Gmail messages, including attachments, automatically, as long as you have the recipient's digital certificate.

While Firefox 2 has built-in phishing protection, it never hurts to have a backup plan. The premise behind Petname is simple: leave reminder notes on your trusted Web sites and the notes will automatically appear each time you return. If you surf to what you assume is one of your whitelisted sites and no reminder note appears, you'll know something's not right. This extension is particularly useful if you're running an older version of Firefox without anti-phishing protection.

SecurePasswordGenerator is a long name for a little extension that sits in your toolbar and helps you create unique passwords. Half the battle of staying safe online is using complex and different passwords whenever you register at a Web site. Use this tool to help you create a unique password everywhere you go.

Have you ever wondered where the information you type into an online form goes once you hit "send"? With FormFox, you can find out. Once you download and enable this extension, hovering your mouse over the data field of a form or search box will reveal exactly who receives the information you enter. Use this extension to check out an unfamiliar Web site before you cough up your name, address, and credit card information while doing your online holiday shopping.

Many people use disposable or temporary email addresses around the Internet to avoid email spam. Although spam is generally considered more of a nusiance than a security issue, there are occasions when a disposable address may be a safer option than providing a real one (on message forums, for example). There are several temporary email services to choose from; the TrashMail.net Firefox extension makes that service an attractive choice.

Sometimes you need to protect your information from the prying eyes of people around you. If you're surfing at an airport or local coffee shop, people wandering past can have a look at the titles of the tabs you have open. Page Title Eraser lets you either blank out the title and icon in your browser's tabs, or replace the text with something of your choice.

When trying to protect your privacy, the last thing you want is for a Web site to collect data on what you do while you visit: where you click, how long you view a page, and so on. That's called profiling. While it's harmless if a site tracks data on how long it took you to read an article on how to install a video game, most people feel that there's no reason a Web site needs to know anything about your surfing habits, even if it's only to collect data for marketing purposes.

Most extensions and tools commonly used to prevent data profiling by search engines work by concealing information from outsiders. TrackMeNot takes the opposite approach and actually sends out a bunch of information for the search engines to process. Of course, it sends mostly false information, which means your search activities remain hidden from view and search engines won't glean any meaningful data from your visit.

These are only a few of several dozen privacy and security extensions available for Firefox; you can find a larger list at Mozilla's Web site. Tools like these can make your surfing experience safer, but remember: nothing is foolproof, and talented hackers can still find ways to pull information from your system if they try hard enough. Always be careful.
